About
Everyone Plays. Everyone Volunteers.
Greenpoint Williamsburg Youth Soccer League (GWYSL), AYSO Region 1328, is a non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to youth soccer. We receive no public funds and all of our expenses are paid from the registration fees of the children who play. We expect all parents to participate in a volunteer role.
AYSO is a non-profit organization that provides youth soccer programs for participants all over the United States and internationally in the Virgin Islands and Trinidad and Tobago. Consisting of over 50,000 teams and 500,000 players nationwide, AYSO is one of the leading youth soccer organizations in the world. It is often called “the biggest soccer club in the world.”
AYSO has developed a soccer program based on age appropriate psychological and physical development of children. It is the only national youth sports organization to take this into account for learning and teaching a sport. For more information on the league philosophy, please also visit AYSO.org.
The 6 Philosophies
We are affiliated with the AYSO because we believe strongly in the six principles of AYSO:
1) Everybody Plays
Our goal is for kids to play soccer—so we mandate that every player on every team must play at least half of every game.
2) Balanced Teams
Each year we form new teams as evenly balanced as possible—because it is fair and more fun when teams of equal ability play.
3) Open Registration
Our program is open to all children who want to register and play soccer. Interest and enthusiasm are the only criteria for playing.
4) Positive Coaching
Encouragement of player effort provides for greater enjoyment by the players and ultimately leads to better-skilled and better-motivated players.
5) Sportsmanship
We strive to create a safe, fair, fun and positive environment based on mutual respect, rather than a win-at-all-costs attitude. Our program is designed to instill good sportsmanship in every facet of AYSO.
6) Player Development
We believe that all players should be able to develop their soccer skills and knowledge to the best of their abilities, both individually and as members of a team, in order to maximize their enjoyment of the game.
A Letter from the Commissioner
We are committed to making GWYSL games a fun and positive experience for all members of our community, and to modeling and promoting the highest level of sportsmanship for our players. To assist in this effort, all misconduct this season will be recorded and tracked, and we are instituting rules for how send-offs (red cards) and the accumulation of cautions (yellow cards) will lead to suspensions, both for players as well as coaches. The detailed rules can be found on our Rules & Regs pages.
Accumulation of Cards for Players
For every three yellow cards that a player receives in a given season, the player shall receive a one-game suspension for the following game.
(The second yellow card in a given game, having resulted in a red card, will not count toward this accumulation.)
If a player receives a red card, in addition to being sent-off they shall be suspended from subsequent games for a minimum of one game, and, if the behavior is egregious, more than one game, to be determined by the regional referee administrator.
Accumulation of Cards for Coaches
For every two yellow cards that a coach receives in a given season, the coach shall receive a one-game suspension for the following game. (The second yellow card in a given game, having resulted in a red card, will not count toward this accumulation.)
If a coach receives a red card, in addition to being sent-off they shall be suspended from subsequent games for a minimum of one game, and, if the behavior is egregious, more than one game, to be determined by the regional operating board.
